CHIEFS AND PIRATES SECURE AFRICAN HONOURS, RESPECTIVELY!

South African clubs – Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs – have advanced to the next round of their respective continental competitions.

Pirates beat Lesotho’s Lioli FC 7-0 on aggregate (3-0 & 4-0) over two legs of play in the African Champions League first preliminary group, while at the same stage of the Confederation Cup, Chiefs beat Angolan side, Kabuscorp SCP 5-4 at FNB Stadium on penalties after a 1-all stalemate over two legs.

Aggregate winners in both the Champions League and Confederation Cup progress to October’s second preliminary round and a step away from the group stages, which kick off in November.

After a first leg full of tight margins and a few shocks, Chiefs and Pirates kept their continental campaign alive.

Chiefs were trailing 1-0 from the leg and winger Makabi Lilepo ensured that Amakhosi level matters to push the match the decisive penalty kicks.

This is where Amakhosi proved their mettle to progress to the next round.

At Orlando Stadium, where Pirates romped victorious to set up a date against  St Eloi Lupopo and Al-Merrikh, Tshepang Moremi and Yanela Mbuthuma were the toast of the afternoon with a brace apiece, and this settled the nerves of the determined Buccaneers.

Betway Premiership champions, Mamelodi Sundowns will be called to action in the second qualifying round where they are pitted against Nigeria’s Remo Stars, who made it through after defeating Comoros’ US Zilimadjou.
