Firearms and Ammunition Linked to Illegal Mining Recovered in Lawley.

A cache of firearms and ammunition believed to be linked to illegal mining activities was recovered during a coordinated intelligence-driven operation in Lawley.
The operation was carried out by members of the OCI PHO Tracing Team, OCI PHO Projects, the Sedibeng Roving Team, and the Gauteng Traffic Police High Priority Crimes and Internal Affairs Unit.
Authorities had been investigating intelligence reports for the past three weeks regarding suspected illegal mining activities involving zama-zamas operating in Germiston and Westonaria.
Information gathered during the investigation suggested that firearms used by the group were being stored at a residence in the Lawley area.
Acting on the intelligence, officers launched follow-up operations at several addresses in Protea Glen and Lawley.
During the operation, the team searched a house in Lawley Extension where they discovered firearms and live ammunition hidden inside the premises.
Three AK-47 rifles were found inside a black bag concealed beneath a bed, while a pistol and two magazines were recovered between a mattress and its base.

Officers also found four rifle magazines and a substantial quantity of live ammunition of different calibres.
In total, police confiscated three AK-47 rifles, one pistol, and approximately 990 rounds of live ammunition.
Additional items recovered at the scene included several cellphones, passports, traffic registration documents, and a Volkswagen vehicle.
Authorities believe the seized firearms may be linked to illegal mining operations in the region. Investigations are continuing.
