MIXED FEELINGS IN UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!

European football delivered a night of drama, relief and heartbreak on Wednesday as some of the continent’s biggest clubs battled for a place in the next round of the UEFA Champions League.

At the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the spotlight belonged to Federico Valverde, whose remarkable hat-trick inspired Real Madrid to a commanding 3–0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their last-16 clash.

Without injured star Kylian Mbappé, many wondered where Madrid’s spark would come from. Valverde answered that question with a performance that electrified the home crowd. His first goal came after racing onto a long pass from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois before calmly finishing past Gianluigi Donnarumma. He struck again with a low drive into the corner before completing a memorable first-half hat-trick after combining neatly with Brahim Díaz.

It was the kind of night where everything seemed to fall Madrid’s way, although City were spared further punishment when Donnarumma saved a penalty from Vinícius Júnior in the second half.

In Paris, defending champions Paris Saint‑Germain also produced an attacking display to remember, defeating Chelsea FC 5–2 at the Parc des Princes.

The match swung back and forth before PSG eventually pulled away. Bradley Barcola opened the scoring, but Malo Gusto brought Chelsea level. Ousmane Dembélé restored PSG’s lead before Enzo Fernández responded for the visitors. The turning point came after a goalkeeping mistake allowed Vitinha to score, before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck twice late on to seal a convincing win.

Elsewhere in Germany, Arsenal FC showed resilience to snatch a 1–1 draw away to Bayer Leverkusen. After Robert Andrich put the hosts ahead early in the second half, substitute Kai Havertz stepped up in the dying minutes to score a penalty against his former club and rescue a crucial result.

It was a reminder of how quickly fortunes can shift in football — one moment despair, the next relief — as Europe’s biggest teams continue their pursuit of Champions League glory.
