THRILLS, SPILLS, AND STRIKING GOLD – ULTIMATE WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP-UP!

Heritage Day brought a festive atmosphere to communities across greater Akasia and Ga-Rankuwa on Thursday, with residents turning out for a variety of sporting, fitness and community events.

In Rosslyn, the Rosslyn Sports Development hosted the second edition of its annual Rosslyn Walk Against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), combining physical activity with a strong community message against violence.

The event, put together by Molefi Mahome and Rorisang Matea, took place against the backdrop of growing national concern over the killings of women in Ekurhuleni, where authorities have been investigating the deaths of several women whose bodies were recovered in different areas.

The cases have sparked widespread public anger and renewed calls from civil society organisations and community groups for stronger action against GBVF.

For participants at the Rosslyn walk, Heritage Day therefore carried a message beyond celebration – it was also an opportunity for residents to stand together and call for safer communities.

Meanwhile, Ga-Rankuwa View Clinic Grounds was transformed into a hive of sporting activity as the Heritage Sports Event attracted sports enthusiasts, families and young people.

People were allowed to bring their meat and braai, open stalls for free, and local businesses were allowed to operate for free.

Masters football and development netball formed part of the day’s programme, providing an opportunity for both experienced players and developing athletes to showcase their talents.

Hosts – Fanty Moeti, Obakeng Molekwa and Tsholofelo Molekwa – described the annual event as a success, with a strong turnout helping to create a lively atmosphere throughout the day.

The sporting activities also demonstrated the role that community sport continues to play in bringing people together, particularly during important national occasions such as Heritage Day.

Elsewhere in Ga-Rankuwa, cyclist and community activist Victor Phiri marked his birthday with a 30km Birthday Celebration Ride, starting and ending at the Shell garage in Zone 4, with top deejays having entertained the attendees.

The cycling showpiece combined fitness and celebration with a community-development initiative. School shoes were donated to Phiri’s foundation, with the shoes earmarked for distribution to learners at different schools.

The initiative added a charitable dimension to the day’s activities, ensuring that the celebration also contributed towards supporting children in need.

Fitness enthusiasts were also not left behind, with aerobics sessions taking place at open spaces as residents embraced the opportunity to exercise and socialise.

The Rosslyn event and Phiri’s cycling initiative both incorporated physical activity into their programmes, reflecting the growing popularity of community-based fitness activities in the area.

In the morning, the Ga-Rankuwa YMCA hosted its Youth Advancement Colour Run/Walk, drawing participants who took part in the colourful fitness activity.

From running and walking to football, netball, cycling and aerobics, Heritage Day provided residents with numerous opportunities to participate in healthy recreational activities.

Although the events differed in purpose and format, they shared a common thread: bringing communities together.

For many residents, Heritage Day was therefore more than a public holiday, as it became an opportunity to celebrate South Africa’s diversity, promote healthy lifestyles, support young people, raise awareness about GBVF and contribute to community development.

The successful turnout across greater Akasia and Ga-Rankuwa demonstrated the appetite for community-led events that combine sport, social interaction, fitness and meaningful causes.

The Akasia Express attended all the events.
