‘MASTER CHEF’ SERVES BAFANA’S HOT DISH AHEAD OF 2025 AFCON IN MOROCCO!

The entire weekend was all about Sipho Mbule!

The reason was that the Orlando Pirates goal-poacher left everything on the field of play when he scored a lone goal that saw Bafana Bafana defeat Ghana’s Black Stars 1-0 at Dobsonville Stadium.

This was just a day before Hugo Broos’ Bafana jet off to Morocco for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), which kicks off on 21 December 2025 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat when hosts play against Comoros, and later on the day, the largest city in the country, Casablanca will host Mali against Zambia at the Mohammed V Stadium.

The tournament fixtures, to be played at nine venues, will end on 18 January 2026 in Rabat.

Known to his fans as “Master Chef” because of a period where he took over the Mamelodi Sundowns cafeteria when the assigned chef was late, Mbule is experiencing a significant career resurgence and shining in his current form with with Orlando Pirates.

Once considered a talented but inconsistent player with off-field issues, he has now become a consistent and influential midfielder, silencing his critics.

Key Highlights of his Success:

  • Club Career Revival: After a challenging period and a loan spell at Sekhukhune United, Mbule was released by Mamelodi Sundowns and joined Orlando Pirates as a free agent in July 2025. His agent and the club have helped him focus on his physical conditioning and consistent performance, leading to impressive displays for the Buccaneers. He has been part of the team’s success, including an MTN 8 cup victory.
  • Bafana Bafana Stardom: Mbule’s form earned him a call-up back to the national team after a long absence, with coach Hugo Broos impressed by his performances.
    • Match-Winning Goal: Most recently, in his 10th appearance for the national team, he scored his first senior international goal, which was a match-winner in a crucial World Cup qualifier against Lesotho on December 17, 2025.
    • World Cup Qualifiers: He has been vocal about the team’s determination to win their qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria to secure a spot in the next World Cup, a goal that appears achievable with recent results.
  • Talent and Vision: Nicknamed “Master Chef” for his creativity and flair, Mbule is widely praised for his vision, technical skills, and ability to control the game from midfield. Observers and former players have noted his “pure class” and ability to deliver individual brilliance when needed.
  • Personal Growth: His current success is seen as a result of personal growth and a commitment to his career, proving that hard work and dedication can help a player reach their full potential. Many are happy to see him thriving and making his family and community proud.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos used the occasion against Ghana to give opportunities to fringe players, including Siwelele FC goalkeeper Ricardo Goss, who has seen limited game time in national colours in recent months.

The first half produced little to excite, with both teams cancelling each other out as they went into the break locked at 0–0. The breakthrough arrived in the 57th minute when Bethlehem-born Mbule lit up the afternoon, unleashing a thunderous long-range strike that flew into the back of the net to settle the contest.

After the match, Broos admitted it was not a spectacle to remember, but stressed that results matter most at this stage of preparation.

“It’s not always the game you want to see a few days before a big tournament, but I’m happy with the result,” said Broos.

“It’s always better to go to Morocco with a victory than with a draw or, in the worst case, a defeat. That said, we can do much better than what we showed today.”

Broos added that while Bafana are riding a wave of confidence after qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, expectations will be higher after their third-place finish at the 2024 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

“We will start AFCON with a different status than two years ago and the pressure will be higher, but I’m not worried,” he said.

“This team has shown it can handle pressure – we did it in the World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Rwanda. We still have a few important players joining us and time to put the finishing touches in place, and I’m sure we’ll be ready to face Angola.”

Bafana will fly out to Morocco on Wednesday, where they will be joined in Marrakech by their overseas-based stars, including Lyle Foster. The Africa Cup of Nations kicks off on Sunday, with hosts Morocco facing Comoros in Rabat. South Africa will begin their campaign on Monday against Angola’s Palancas Negras at the Marrakech Stadium, with kick-off set for 19:00. – Additional reporting by OFM
