MOTSEPE REJECTS SENEGL’S CORRUPTION CLAIMS, DEFENDS CAF INTEGRITY!
Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has firmly rejected corruption allegations reportedly raised by officials in Senegal, describing the claims as baseless and damaging to the image of African football.
The controversy emerged following reports that Senegalese football authorities had questioned certain CAF decisions, suggesting possible irregularities within the organisation’s governance structures.
However, Motsepe has moved swiftly to dismiss the accusations, insisting that CAF operates with transparency and accountability.
Speaking on the matter, Motsepe emphasised that CAF has made significant progress in strengthening governance, financial management, and ethical standards since he assumed office in 2021. He reiterated that the organisation remains committed to clean administration and zero tolerance for corruption.
“We take any allegations of misconduct very seriously, but we will not allow unsubstantiated claims to undermine the progress that has been made,” said Motsepe.
The CAF president further highlighted reforms introduced under his leadership, including stricter financial oversight and enhanced compliance measures aimed at restoring credibility to African football’s governing body. He added that independent audits and governance reviews have been key in ensuring transparency.
The dispute threatens to create tension between CAF and Senegal, one of Africa’s football powerhouses and home to top talents such as Sadio Mane.
Analysts warn that continued disagreements could impact unity within the continental football community if not resolved through proper dialogue.
Despite the allegations, Motsepe remains confident in CAF’s direction, urging member associations to work collaboratively to grow the game across the continent.
“As Africans, we must focus on building football that inspires pride and creates opportunities for our youth,” he said.
CAF has not indicated whether it will take further action regarding the claims, but has reiterated its commitment to upholding integrity and good governance in all its operations.
All the disagreements are products of Motsepe’s quest to address the growing controversy surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) dispute between Senegal and Morocco, after Morocco won a case that could see the premium African football title stripped from Senegal.
The issue has sparked widespread debate across the continent, with supporters and football officials questioning the ruling’s implications for the tournament’s integrity.
The dispute escalated after Senegal reportedly lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), challenging the outcome of the case in favour of Morocco.
Motsepe acknowledged the seriousness of the matter, stating that CAF respects legal processes and will abide by CAS’s final decision.
He emphasised that the organisation is committed to fairness and due process, urging all parties to allow the legal system to take its course without inflaming tensions.
Motsepe further called for unity and calm among member associations, stressing that African football must remain focused on development rather than division.
While refraining from commenting on the merits of the case, he reiterated CAF’s dedication to transparency and good governance, assuring fans that the integrity of AFCON remains a top priority as the situation unfolds.
