SMART CCTV CAMERAS TO KEEP GA-RANKUWA SAFE!
With crime statistics on the rise in South Africa, Gauteng Provincial Premier Panyaza Lesufi could be feeling a sense of relief and vindication after reports suggest that contact crime has gone down in his neck of the woods.
During the reporting period of January to March 2025, Gauteng experienced a decrease in several crime categories, with notable reductions in contact crimes, property-related crimes, and arson/malicious property damage.
Gauteng has been notorious for crime, but things have turned out for the better since the rollout of smart CCTV cameras to keep the province safe.
However, in all honesty, crime is so high in Gauteng that the suggested drop is just a drop in the ocean, and many would disagree that the readings are correct, considering the terrible state that the province is in when it comes to criminality.
In case you’ve missed it, Ga-Rankuwa, just on the intersection at the main taxi rank on your way to George Mukhari Hospital, the 4-way “Gauteng Safe, One Camera at a Time!” CCTV cameras have been installed to monitor activities at the corner.
Through the smart CCTV rollout in partnership, Lesufi is hoping to help police authorities fight crime in real-time using technology to build a safer province.
Lesufi is spearheading the implementation of a smart CCTV camera network across the province to combat crime.
This initiative involves the deployment of thousands of cameras in various locations, including schools, crime hot-spots, and public spaces, as part of a broader strategy to enhance safety and security.
Lesufi, in his state of the province address earlier this year, said using CCTV cameras to keep tabs on 442 crime-lords and kingpins in Gauteng “so we can monitor their moments” and “we can monitor the acts they want to commit.”
“We now monitor them on a 24-hour basis,” he said, adding “We are quite convinced that our CCTV footage is working” and that law enforcement had used CCTV systems to foil over 1,000 criminal activities by that time in February.
