FIVE DEAD, DOZENS INJURED IN N6 BUS AND CAR COLLISION!
A tragic road accident on the N6 between East London and Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape has left five people dead and dozens injured, sending shockwaves through communities and highlighting the ongoing dangers on South Africa’s highways.
The fatal crash occurred on Sunday night, 9 March 2026, when a bus travelling toward Stutterheim collided head-on with a Volkswagen Polo carrying five occupants. Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of the devastating collision.
According to officials, the bus was transporting about 60 passengers, believed to be Zimbabwean nationals, when the accident happened along the busy national route connecting East London and inland towns.
The impact of the crash was severe.
The VW Polo reportedly became trapped underneath the bus, leaving emergency responders with the difficult task of extricating the victims. Rescue teams used hydraulic cutting equipment—commonly known as the “jaws of life”—to remove the occupants from the wreckage. Sadly, all five people inside the Polo were declared dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, the passengers travelling on the bus suffered various injuries. Reports indicate that around 60 people were hurt in the collision, with emergency medical personnel transporting the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment and further evaluation.
Authorities have since launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Early reports suggest that the two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when the collision occurred, but officials have not yet confirmed what led to the impact.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport and Community Safety has opened a case of culpable homicide and reckless driving at the Stutterheim police station as part of the ongoing investigation.
Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery. Authorities have also urged motorists to remain vigilant on the roads and obey traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies.
The N6 is a major national route linking East London with inland cities such as Komani and Bloemfontein, and it carries heavy traffic from buses, trucks and private vehicles. The latest crash has again raised concerns about road safety on the busy corridor.
