FLERMMING BERG BULLISH AFTER SUPER WIN!
The golden glow of African success has once again illuminated Mamelodi Sundowns, and standing proudly at the heart of the achievement is Danish football strategist Flemming Berg – the man who arrived in Tshwane four years ago with one mission: to bring the CAF Champions League trophy back home.
And, now that mission is now complete and has all the bragging rights.
After Sundowns secured a dramatic 2-1 aggregate victory over Moroccoâs AS FAR in the 2026 CAF Champions League final, Berg could finally reflect on the journey that transformed ambition into history.
The Brazilians held AS FAR to a tense 1-1 draw in Rabat, with midfielder Teboho Mokoena scoring the crucial away goal that delivered Sundowns their second continental crown since their maiden triumph in 2016.
For Berg, however, the achievement means far more than silverware or the reported R100 million prize money attached to the triumph. The greatest reward is the âsecond starâ now earned by the club – a powerful symbol worn above the badge to signify two African titles.
On X, the emotional Sporting Director reflected on the achievement with pride and relief.
âFour years ago I joined this spectacular Football Club as Sporting Director. The quest of winning the clubâs second CAF Champions League Trophy since the first in 2016 was outspoken and clear from the start,â Berg wrote on X.
âIt has been a journey with ups and downs, but always strategical and determined.â
Those words capture the essence of Bergâs influence at Sundowns.
Since arriving at Chloorkop in 2022, the former Danish Football Association development chief and ex-Chelsea scout has helped modernise the clubâs football structures while strengthening its already formidable reputation on the continent.
Before coming to South Africa, Berg spent years shaping elite youth development in Denmark, helping produce players who would later shine across Europeâs biggest leagues.
His football philosophy has always centred on long-term planning, technical excellence, and sustainable success, qualities that fit naturally into Sundownsâ vision.
But the road to continental glory was not smooth.

Sundowns suffered heartbreak in last yearâs final, losing to Egyptâs Pyramids FC after coming painfully close to reclaiming the title. Questions were raised about recruitment, squad depth, and whether the clubâs heavy investment strategy would eventually deliver Africaâs biggest prize.
Instead of panic, Berg and the Sundowns hierarchy responded with patience and structure.
This season, the club showed resilience throughout a difficult campaign, overcoming challenges against top opposition including EspĂŠrance de Tunis and AS FAR. Coach Miguel Cardoso praised the teamâs fighting spirit after the final, saying Sundowns âdeserved to winâ after surviving intense pressure in Morocco.
Club chairman Tlhopie Motsepe is believed to be equally delighted with Bergâs contribution behind the scenes.
Since his appointment, Berg has worked closely with the Motsepe family to ensure Sundowns remain not only South Africaâs dominant force, but also a respected global football brand.
The victory also secures Sundowns a place in future international competitions, including the Intercontinental Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup pathway, further elevating the clubâs status.
Yet amid the celebrations, money and prestige seem secondary.
For Berg, this was about legacy, it was about restoring Sundowns to the summit of African football.
And now, with a second star shining proudly above the famous yellow crest, the Danish architect has etched his name into the rich history of Mamelodi Sundowns forever.
