SIX CONFIRMED DEAD IN ORMONDE BUILDING COLLAPSE!
Rescue teams are continuing search and recovery operations after a building collapsed in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg, leaving at least six people dead and others feared trapped beneath the rubble.
Emergency services confirmed that one injured individual was transported to hospital shortly after the incident, while specialised rescue teams remain on site working to locate additional victims.
The collapse occurred at approximately 14:03 at 6 Amethyst Business Park in Ormonde.
Paramedics, firefighters and search-and-rescue personnel were swiftly deployed to the scene, where they are also securing the surrounding area to prevent further risk.
Mgcini Tshwaku, Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, provided an update on the situation, describing the incident as fatal and confirming that authorities will investigate whether the building had the necessary municipal approvals and complied with safety regulations.
Tshwaku stated that the City will assess whether proper building plans were submitted and approved, and whether all compliance requirements were met prior to construction or occupation.
The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been determined. Structural engineers and relevant authorities are expected to form part of the investigation to establish whether the incident was due to structural failure, possible illegal construction, or other factors.
Residents and members of the public have been urged to avoid the area while emergency operations continue.
Law enforcement officials have cordoned off the scene to allow rescue personnel to conduct their work without interference.
Building collapses in urban areas often trigger broader concerns around regulatory oversight, construction standards and enforcement of municipal by-laws. Authorities have indicated that a full report will be compiled once preliminary investigations are concluded.
Further updates are expected as rescue efforts continue.
