Kwa-Thema woman allegedly plotted fake kidnapping to extort money from her cousin.
A 37-year-old woman from Kwa-Thema, Ekurhuleni, who was allegedly reported kidnapped and later rescued, has landed herself in trouble with the law after police investigations revealed that she had allegedly staged the entire incident.
The woman was arrested on Tuesday, alongside an alleged accomplice, after investigators uncovered what police believe was a calculated scheme to extort money from her own cousin.
According to police, the alleged kidnapping was never a genuine abduction but a plan hatched by the woman and her accomplice to make her cousin believe she was in danger and pressure the relative into handing over money.
The shocking revelation has turned what initially appeared to be a kidnapping case into a criminal investigation against the alleged victim herself.
Instead of being treated as a victim of a serious crime, the woman now faces the prospect of answering to the courts over her alleged role in manufacturing the incident.
The pair are expected to appear before court on charges of defeating the ends of justice, extortion and staging a crime scene.
Police have not treated the matter lightly, warning that fabricated criminal reports can have serious consequences and divert valuable resources from genuine emergencies.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi cautioned members of the public against making false reports or staging criminal incidents.
“These divert critical police resource from genuine cases and undermines efforts to combat crime and protect communities,” Nevhuhulwi said.
The case serves as a warning that allegedly staging a crime to obtain money can have serious legal consequences.
