PROBE CONTINUES INTO MPHO MAFOLE’S ASSASSINATION!
Chief Auditor Mpho Mafole of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality was assassinated just three days after submitting a report that exposed serious procurement irregularities in a R1.8 billion chemical toilets contract.
According to a detailed investigation by News24.com, Mafole had been instructed to conduct a probity audit into how the municipality awarded a three-year tender for the supply and maintenance of mobile chemical toilets in informal settlements. His audit uncovered serious flaws in how bids were evaluated and approved.

Out of 223 companies that submitted bids, 208 were disqualified, and only 15 were awarded contracts. The audit found that the Bid Evaluation Committee failed to apply due diligence, describing the process as “not fair and consistent” and warning that the tender could result in irregular expenditure and potential legal challenges from losing bidders.
Mafole’s report called for immediate corrective action and warned management to fix the evaluation process to prevent irregular expenditure. Four days later, he was shot nine times in Kempton Park after meeting with municipal officials. Nothing was taken from his car.

Among the companies allegedly disqualified without valid reasons were Mzingelwa Mamepe Group, Sjmmdlalose (Pty) Ltd, Boitumelo Maduna Enterprises, and Molaba Investment Corporation.
This was not just a contract, it was a project meant to deliver basic sanitation to communities without access to water or toilets. Instead, it has exposed how deep corruption has taken hold in local government procurement.
